Look for light down jackets made with lightweight, high breathability shell fabrics like nylon, ripstop nylon or even polyester in some cases. These allow perspiration moisture and air movement while retaining heat.

Down fill itself offers breathability. Higher fill power down tends to be more breathable as it contains less quill shafts and more fluffy down clusters that don't impede airflow.

How much do quality light down jackets cost?

Expect to spend $150 to $400 for a good light down jacket from an outdoor brand. At the lower end, around $150, you'll get basic 700 or 800 fill down proofed with DWR. Moving up in price gets you better design, insulation and shell fabrics.

On the premium end at $300+ you'll see high-end down (850+ fill power goose down), lightweight 10-20D nylon shells, premium DWR treatments and complex baffle designs. These cost more but also pack down very small and provide exceptional light warmth.

Should I get a down or synthetic fill jacket?

Down insulation generally provides the best warmth for weight and packability. However, synthetic insulation better retains insulating ability when wet. Light down jackets work well with periodic light moisture if the outer shell has a durable water repellent (DWR) treatment. But for very wet conditions or activities, synthetic fills remain warm when soaked.

Down also requires more care to retain loft. Follow washing instructions and use down specific detergents. Synthetic jackets can simply be tossed in the washing machine. For versatility, light weight and packability, quality down jackets are hard to beat if you avoid heavy rain and soakings.
