The Stories Behind The Names

Highlighting the inspiration behind the names of a few of our signature collections. Stories we believe are both worth knowing, and telling.

These are stories worth telling.

What’s in a name? For us, it’s at the heart of every product and collection we sell, and each one is meant to tell a deeper story. Some are inspired by our surroundings: the mountains, rivers and trails where we play throughout the valley. Others honor the history, character, and culture that make our hometown the special place it is. All of them are infused with the spirit of our company, our values and our commitment to innovation. After all, no Stio piece is like any other, because of the special care and attention that goes into every detail. Naming is our way of not only communicating these core attributes or the intended use of each product, but of honoring its inspiration by celebrating the reasons we exist: to foster exploration and connection to the natural world around us.

Our flagship mountain water sport collection pays homage to the stretches of river we live to run all summer long. Named CFS, which stands for “cubic feet per second”, each style pairs UPF 50+ sun protection with water-resistant, quick-drying fabric, and four-way stretch ideal for casting, rowing, paddling or simply soaking up lazy days on the lake.

OPR, an acronym for “Old Pass Road”, celebrates the main gateway to some of the best singletrack in Teton Valley, accessed by an old road at the base of Teton Pass. A fitting name for our expanded collection of technical mountain bike apparel, capable of switching back and forth from saddle to post-ride beers at the Stagecoach Bar on your way back into town.

Men's Jacket | Women's Jacket

Our new and most technical spring hardshell is designed with ounces in mind, offering exceptional, lightweight performance for active alpine athletes when the forecast is iffy and turning back is not an option. Named for bold and daring adventures, the Exploit will be your partner on fast and technical missions in the mountains.

Curtis Camp

Men's SS | Men's Chambray SS | Women's SS

Our playful take on classic, western ranch wear, this fine-tuned field shirt offers laid-back mountain style as comfortable as kicking back with pals around the BBQ or the campfire. Made of premium organic cotton/recycled polyester in fun patterns and colors with a silhouette that’s both relaxed yet flattering, its name pays homage to one of our favorite places to spend the night in the great wide open: Curtis Canyon campground, boasting stunning views of the Tetons that remind us of the inspiration to be found in nature daily.

Gannett Peak

Our Gannet Peak Fleece collection is named after the Wind River Range's Gannett Peak, the highest peak in Wyoming (elev. 13,809'.) Designed for inspired alpine athletes, it’s the ideal midweight base layer for high-output endeavors or a cushy après recovery pant. These styles get you around town, to and from early morning pass laps, lounging around after a gym session and everywhere in between.

An eddy is the perfect metaphor for our happy place, whether on the river or the trail. And that’s the essence of our signature tech shirt designed specifically for anglers and river enthusiasts. Offering lightweight stretch, UPF 50+ sun protection, mesh venting for breathability, fly-fishing specific features, and style that can run from river to trail to town, designed to always go with the flow.

Named for the second highest peak in the Wind River Range (elevation 13,751'), the Fremont collection is our core athleisure offering, inspired by the get-after-after attitude of our hometown. Pairing technical performance ideal for chilly summer morning jogs, weekends camping or commutes to and from the ski hill in the winter—delivering unbeatable comfort, lightweight stretch, and about-town style made for packing the most into every day.

Men's Short | Women's Short

A tribute to one of our favorite out-and-backs in the Gros Ventre range, our versatile, water-resistant, quick-drying hiking short honors the trek to Goodwin Lake, where mid-summer temps sometimes require a quick dip before heading back down the trail.

Quite possibly our most celebrated and well-worn lightweight down layer, the Pinion Collection is named after the mechanics of a bird’s wing that enables it to fly. Loved for its lightweight, warmth, it’s earned a reputation as the puffy you wear all day—inside and out. Featuring responsibly sourced, exceptionally packable 800-fill HyperDRY™ water-repellent down that transitions from activity to activity, season after season.

Fitting for our line of alpine active-wear designed for every aspect of mountain life, our Peak to Valley collection is up for anything, from Town Square to the top of the pass. Built with versatile Relance™ Primeflex™ microfiber offering four-way stretch and a soft, wicking mesh liner to tackle everything from high-alpine treks to early morning jogs, around-town outings or simply chilling at home when down time calls.

Inspired by the natural surroundings that draw us to our hometown, our Sweetwater collection pays homage to the home of the Green River headwaters, Sweetwater County, just south of Jackson Hole. An everyday staple made of 100% recycled fleece with a classic, feminine silhouette for laid-back, stylish comfort, it’s best known for its adaptability, easily juggling days at the office, midday hikes and time spent cozied up in a remote cabin for a weekend with pals.

Turpin Meadows is one of the oldest, continually operating guest ranches in Jackson, WY, and our Turpin line is a tribute to the iconic western spirit that runs deep throughout our collection of fleece joggers and pullovers. Blending relaxed mountain-town style with unbeatable cold-weather performance. This collection was built with super-soft REPREVE® recycled fiber for a cozy, ultra-soft wardrobe essential for any day there’s a chill in the air.
