Iris grew up in North Lake Tahoe, where she competed in slopestyle and rail jams for eight years, then started entering freeride competitions. She has won multiple NorthFace masters events and competed on the Freeride World Tour for two years.
Now, Iris lives in Jackson working with young adults with special needs and guiding backcountry snowboarding with Exum Mountain Guides. She’s living her childhood dreams snowboarding all winter, hunting in the off-season, biking and helping people achieve their goals.
Iris balances being a mountain athlete with other passions. Any given week, you can find her coaching Special Olympics, volunteering with Teton Adaptive Sports, crafting, exploring with her dog or spending time with friends.
Balance Is Key and Outside Is For Everyone. Snowboarding has given me so much and for years it’s been my obsession, leaving no room for anything else. While incredibly rewarding, I needed more balance in my life, which I found through coaching and mentoring young adults with special needs. Now I have a new perspective and appreciation for independence and helping others find their individual ways of doing life and incorporating outdoor activities into it.
After adventuring, traveling or simply dumping all my energy into whatever I'm doing, how do I find balance again? Having time at home being creative, cooking wholesome meals, hunting, gathering, gardening, baking, stretching and hanging out with my pup are some things I incorporate into my life. I can get so strung out going, going, going that these fall off the wagon, so I am learning to notice the signs of when the balance is off. Something small I do to get balance back is to set a timer for 5 minutes while I do some simple stretches, moving with my breath and getting centered.
A winter hut trip in Europe, snowboarding Japanese and South American volcanos, a mountain biking trip to Moab, elk hunting in New Mexico, and caribou bow hunting in northern Alaska.
Usually I start a radio station based on one of these: Alt j, Kai Straw, Glass Animals, Moontricks, kr3ture, or something jazzy, funky, electric with some bass… or I listen to books or podcasts.
Don’t worry about the drama, prioritize making plans with people you love, educate yourself, know what your self care looks like and recover.
